Combipatch Information:
What is Combipatch?
Combipatch contains both estrogen and progestin and is prescribed to women going through menopause to combat common symptoms of low estrogen levels, such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness. The progestin in this medication helps lower the risk of uterus cancer, which can be caused by using estrogen products. The drug comes in a patch and is absorbed through the skin.
How do I take Combipatch?
This patch is typically applied to a clean, dry area of the lower stomach. You may need to hold the patch in place for about 10 seconds to ensure that it doesn’t fall off. If it does fall off, reapply it to a different area. Your doctor should give you a dosing schedule when writing your prescription; most women who use this medication are instructed to replace the patch every 3 to 4 days. When changing patches, you should apply the new patch to a different area and avoid applying a patch to the recently covered area for at least a week.
Before taking Combipatch, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to estradiol, norethindrone, or any other medications
- You are using any other prescription or non-prescription medications
- You have ever had cancer of the uterus, ovaries, or breast
- You have a family history of cancer, breast lumps, angioedema, or blood clots
- You have a history of heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, or gallbladder disease
- You have ever had a stroke or blood clots
- You have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes
- You have ever had lupus
- You have a history of hypothyroidism or hypoparathyroidism
- You have ever had a calcium imbalance
- You have ever been diagnosed with any uterus problems
- You have asthma
- You have a history of seizures or migraine headaches
- You have the blood disorder porphyria
- You have any mental or mood disorders
What are the possible side effects of taking Combipatch?
Although side effects are not common, Combipatch can cause skin irritation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, breast tenderness, headache, bloating, or weight changes in some women. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor. Let your doctor know right away if you experience any of the following rare but serious side effects: sudden changes in mood or mental state (including memory loss), increased vaginal irritation, unusual vaginal bleeding, breast lumps, severe abdominal pain, dark urine, frequent urination and increased thirst, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or swelling of the extremities.
What if I forget to take a dose of Combipatch?
If you forget to change your patch when you are supposed to, replace it as soon as you remember. Never place more than one patch on your skin in an effort to catch up on a missed dose.
How do I store Combipatch?
The Combipatch patches come in sealed pouches. Do not remove a patch from its pouch until you are ready to use it. Keep the pouches out of reach of pets and children. Store this medication at room temperature, and talk to your pharmacist about how to properly dispose of it if you no longer need it or it has expired. When kept at room temperature, Combipatch expires at 6 months or the expiration date listed on your prescription.
What happens if I overdose on Combipatch?
If an overdose is suspected while wearing a medication patch, remove the patch and contact poison control at 1-800-222-1222. If you or someone in your household has swallowed a patch, call 911 and seek emergency medical attention.
Warnings
You should not smoke or use tobacco products while on Combipatch, as the combination of estrogen and tobacco products increase your risk of high blood pressure, blood clots, stroke, and heart attack. In very rare cases, Combipatch may cause blood clots. Tell your doctor if you will be confined to a sitting or standing position for a long time (e.g. while traveling), and seek immediate medical attention if you experience chest, jaw, or left arm pain; weakness on one side of the body; tingling or numbness in your limbs; sudden vision changes; difficulty breathing; sudden dizziness; or coughing up blood. This medication can also sometimes cause dark, discolored areas of skin on the face. To reduce the risk of discoloration, avoid prolonged sun exposure and wear protective clothing or sunscreen when you do need to be outside.
